Charities We Give A Poop About
There are over 1 million Canadians living today with developmental disabilities, including Autism, Aspergers Disease and Down Syndrome. There is no cure for a developmental disability – there is only hope – hope provided through organizations like Reena. Since 1973, Reena has been caring for people with developmental disabilities. Today, Reena is a leader and pioneer in the provision of comprehensive portfolio of services to people with developmental disabilities in Ontario. Reena provides housing and supervisory services to individuals where ongoing care is no longer within the capability of the family. Currently over 300 people live in Reena homes. People of all ages are cared for in Reena homes. Whether the individual is a child with autism or an aging adult, individuals live in age and need appropriate settings. Reena is the acknowledged leader in training and educating professionals providing front line care to individuals with developmental disabilities. In fact George Brown College has partnered with Reena to offer a certified program for individuals. Reena also provides vital Respite and Enrichment Programs to families who continue to care for their loved one at home. These families require assistance in meeting the enormous demands that come with caring for an individual with a developmental disability. The responsibility is a 24-hour a day, 7 days a week task, even while meeting the needs of the remainder of the family. Most of our families refer to these programs as “life-lines” because oftentimes they are the only source of respite keeping the family out of crisis. Government funding only goes so far. The majority of the funding for these vital programs come from community support.
