Charities We Give A Poop About
Lilah is really amazing. She is warm and bubbly, bright and curious, with a little stubbornness mixed in the pot. While this may sound like many 4 and 5 year old children, Lilah's life didn't have such an easy start with life which makes us even more proud of how she has blossomed. Lilah is a survivor of neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer that attacks the central nervous system. Lilah's tumor, which was the size of a golf ball in an 8 lb baby, was found on her first day of life due to a not-so-routine ultrasound. The ultrasound had been scheduled right away in order to have a look at her solitary kidney, which we had learned about prenatally. As a result, we were sent to SickKids almost immediately for diagnosis and treatment. It is Lilah's Fund's mission to end Children's Cancer NOW!

There are over 1 million Canadians living today with developmental disabilities, including Autism, Aspergers Disease and Down Syndrome. There is no cure for a developmental disability – there is only hope – hope provided through organizations like Reena. Since 1973, Reena has been caring for people with developmental disabilities. Today, Reena is a leader and pioneer in the provision of comprehensive portfolio of services to people with developmental disabilities in Ontario. Reena provides housing and supervisory services to individuals where ongoing care is no longer within the capability of the family. Currently over 300 people live in Reena homes. People of all ages are cared for in Reena homes. Whether the individual is a child with autism or an aging adult, individuals live in age and need appropriate settings. Reena is the acknowledged leader in training and educating professionals providing front line care to individuals with developmental disabilities. In fact George Brown College has partnered with Reena to offer a certified program for individuals. Reena also provides vital Respite and Enrichment Programs to families who continue to care for their loved one at home. These families require assistance in meeting the enormous demands that come with caring for an individual with a developmental disability. The responsibility is a 24-hour a day, 7 days a week task, even while meeting the needs of the remainder of the family. Most of our families refer to these programs as “life-lines” because oftentimes they are the only source of respite keeping the family out of crisis. Government funding only goes so far. The majority of the funding for these vital programs come from community support.

We recognize that there is a growing need in our communities to make physical activity a priority in the lives of Canadian children. Research has proven that participation in sports and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life through: o A healthier lifestyle o Increased self-esteem and confidence o The opportunity to learn important leadership skills o Improved school performance and future education expectations o More positive relationships and strengthened support networks Additionally, research has indicated that 1 in 3 Canadian families cannot afford to place their children in sport and recreation activities because of financial barriers (Ipsos Reid, 2005). We at Canadian Tire have seen the need and have taken up the challenge to help provide Canadian children in financial need with the opportunity to participate in sport and recreation through Canadian Tire Jumpstart so they can develop essential life skills, self-esteem and confidence. Launched in 2005 by Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities (formerly the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families), Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a charitable program to help kids in financial need participate in organized sports and recreation such as hockey, dance, soccer and swimming. The program covers costs such as registration fees, transportation and equipment. National in scope but local in its focus, Canadian Tire Jumpstart delivers support through a Canadian-wide network of local chapters. There are currently 279 Jumpstart Chapters in communities across Canada. Canadian Tire Jumpstart helps more than 50,000 children annually get in the game. In 2008 the Scouts Canada Foundation launched No One Left Behind -a grant program to provide financial assistance to help children so they can join and participate in Scouting -regardless of their family’s financial situation. All members of Scouting participate in local fundraising but sometimes money needed for camps etc is not fully raised and the child’s parents will “top-up” any shortfall. Some parents, facing financial difficulties, cannot top-up fundraising and these kids are eligible for No One Left Behind support. The S.A.F.E Foundation is a Wales based NGO committed to poverty reduction in small, marginalized communities in the developing world. Despite mainstream aid being warmly received in many poor countries, there remains a huge number of people that can't access this assistance, either becuase they are so remote, their communities are so small, or the only aid they see is conditional. The S.A.F.E Foundation responds to these needs by implementing programmes covering health, education, livelihood, equality and empowerment in a culturally sensitive, grass roots and unconditional way. We work with people who are incredibly poor, homeless, disabled and desperate to gain some quality of life. Back home, we take development education into our communities, and work to dispel stigmas about poverty, ethnicity, tradition and culture with a view to promoting international understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
